Abstract

Purpose

This paper studies the relationship between network power, knowledge base and innovation performance by taking the patent data of Shanghai new energy vehicle industry from 2004 to 2018.

Social-network analysis; negative binomial regression

Findings

The results show that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between the network power and its innovation performance in the cooperative innovation network. That is, at the initial stage of cooperative innovation network formation, network power has a positive impact on innovation performance. However, with the gradual evolution of cooperative innovation network, the advantages of the innovation subject with large network power to match the appropriate partners are gradually reduced. In addition, both the knowledge base diversity and consistency of innovation subjects has a significant positive correlation with innovation performance respectively. That is, the more knowledge base diversity and consistency the subject has, the more likely it is to improve innovation performance. This paper also verifies knowledge base diversity positively moderates the relationship between network power and innovation performance, while knowledge base consistency negatively moderates the relationship between network power and innovation performance.

Originality/value

At the theoretical level, the paper introduces knowledge base as a moderator to make an incremental contribution to the research on contingency factors between network power and innovation performance. At the level of management practice, innovation subjects should pursue appropriate network power according to their own knowledge base.
